Sweet sixteens are very momentous in hispanic families.
This is the time when young girls become women and often times, and enormous celebration takes place. These customs are very popular in South and Central America. However, with immigrants arriving in North America, many families continue to celebrate this honored tradition, especially in New York City. This is the story of Mia, who was getting ready for her Sweet Sixteen in the most elaborate and beautiful way.
All different shades of pink surround her large bedroom as she stares into her vanity mirror. The makeup artist contours her face as Mia’s mother serves her a fresh bottle of water. Mia is wrapped in a pink robe and is answering her phone non-stop from her many friends. As she preps for her birthday celebration, all I could think about was how much I felt like I was in the presence of an actual princess.
